Kalymnos Island is a hidden rock climbing meca located in the eastern Aegean.
This unique Greek Island is undiscovered by the mass tourists of Europe and boasts
a plethora of climbing options all within a short distance. The atmosphere is laid
back, the food is amazing and the people quickly become friends for life.

The island features 22 crags and over 300 different
routes. Only 1% of the island has been explored so many new routes are available
for the inclined. The best months to visit are September - November and late
March through Mid June.
Combining a trip to Kalymnos during Greek Easter in April is a once in
a lifetime experience that shouldn't be missed. Kalymnians as they are called, celebrate
the holiday with a traditional dances, parades, feasts and a controversial custom
which basically involves throwing dynamite bombs from two competing mountain tops.
The custom involves a select group of local crazies who build their
own dynamite based explosives which they pack carefully to create the largest explosions
with the most hair raising impact. On Easter Sunday the whole island gathers below
the two mountains in the Port Town of Pothia to see the show, that lasts for hours.
For more information on this crazy but ultra fun tradition please see a good friend
of R7's site: Kalymnian
Easter.
The R7 trip includes lodging in traditional Greek island apartments
with a view of the sea and a scooter for motoring around the island. Traffic is
light, especially during climbing seasons and all the climbs can be accessed within
a 2 mile span of coastal road. The beauty of the island is its laid back atmosphere,
combined with the super climber friendly locals and the pure number of varying climbs
makes it a great place for groups of climbers of all abilities. There is something
for everyone.
